Richard C. Heinze

Photographer

Richard Heinze is a landscape photographer born and raised in Missouri. Growing up in a small town gave him quick access to the countryside, which was only a short bike ride away. His parents passed along an appreciation for natural beauty through shared observations and the landscape paintings that his mother did as a hobby.

A graduate of the University of Missouri, Richard has no formal training in photography but has worked to gain experience in capturing an exceptional image that evokes presence to the observer. To this end, color intensity, reflected light, and depth of shadow are very important.

Though travels have taken him to Oregon, California, Washington State and New Mexico, much of his work explores the diversity of landscapes, light and color found in Eastern and Central Kansas.

Richard is a member of the Village Presbyterian Church in Prairie Village. A former deacon, he sings in the Village Choir and has recently moved back to Kansas City.

Artist Statement

I have long been fascinated by the play of sunlight on the Earth. Changing light levels and their interaction with water, sky and the weather provide color that can be subdued, then suddenly overwhelming. The experience of watching this transformation is often inspiring, even humbling.

The serenity of a waking landscape, sunsets that appear to have set the sky on fire, light and colors reflected in water with intensity that seem to exceed the source. Extended exposures provide a record of time - stored in bathing light and flowing water.

This is what I seek to try and record with the camera. Taking photographs year-round, I prefer the clear air, color intensity, and deep shadows of winter. Using traditional technology, transparency films and available light, what is shown here is only what the camera sees. Nothing is added or removed. Although, given time, the camera will record what the eye cannot.

A two dimensional medium cannot recreate the three-dimensional experience of this transition. But it can serve as a reminder of the absolute beauty that exists in the natural world. That which man cannot create, only bear witness.

I hope that you if enjoy viewing my photographs or choose one for your home, they will remind you to look for the light fading in the sky.

Walk the Earth and feel the light.  It’s a great show
